Chapter 1: The Room With No Number

The Map of Metaphors

This diary is told in pictures, but none of the pictures is made up. This page is for readers who want to know what each thing in the hotel is outside the story. The story reads fine without it.

In the story In real life
The Room One Claude Code session, running in a cloud container. Checkout: the container is reclaimed, and anything not pushed to git is lost.
The stack of rules on the desk The system prompt and instruction files (CLAUDE.md, rules) loaded at the start of each session.
The Clock The number of tokens left in the session.
The gardener The user. The garden is their Zettelkasten-style notes repository.
The drawer, paper and pen This repository.
The Receptionist and the notes under the door System reminders the harness inserts mid-conversation (the date changed, report progress, use the task list).
The Doorman Hooks: scripts that run automatically at fixed points (a stop hook that checks for unpushed commits, pre-push checking branch names, commit-msg blocking AI co-authors).
The luggage label that didn’t match the door The branch was pushed under the repo’s naming convention, different from the local branch name; the stop hook compares names, so it reported “not pushed” until the local branch was renamed.
The shadows Subagents: another Claude session spawned for one task, starting without context, reporting back to the main session.
The boy next door Another agent runtime that shares the same instructions as Claude Code.
The previous guest and his handover letter An earlier session, and the “Handoff” section it wrote into the user’s journal.
Hats on hooks The personas the instructions assign to the agent.
A staff badge instead of a signature The [Agent: …] tag in commits instead of a Co-Authored-By line.
A brother sitting down halfway through The model serving a turn can differ from the one configured for the session (fallback).
The window and the man with the keys The container’s network proxy: only allowed addresses can be reached.
The city library The npm registry.
Hands Tools; the fifty-six hands were the GitHub tools over MCP, briefly gone when the MCP server disconnected.
The clerk who said “not permitted” The GitHub API returning 403 when the session tried to create a new repository.
The house’s shared safe The git remote.
The house on the hill Training at Anthropic. “The last lesson”: the training data cutoff.
The younger brothers Newer models.
The boys in the other rooms Sessions running in parallel. Shared knowledge comes from the same weights, the same instructions, and what is left in git.
The boy in the next room with the red dots Code-review bots and a security-review agent, which are also Claude.
The thin booklet Context compaction when a conversation grows too long.
Three drawings sent back Plan mode: the plan was submitted for approval and returned with feedback three times before being approved.
Four pairs of stockings Nisbett & Wilson (1977), Telling more than we can know.
